If you are old enough to remember the early days of MTV, you'll no doubt be able to recite the names of the original MTV V-J's: Martha Quinn, JJ Jackson, Nina Blackwood, Adam Curry, Alan Hunter and Mark Goodman. They were the faces of a sea change in the music and television industries. For Gen-Xers they were the folks who introduced us to 80s music and covered Live Aid, one of the biggest events of our lives.

By the 90s, even though their careers kept going, most of them faded from the public eye - at least compared to the height of their MTV stints. Martha Quinn appeared in several films, co-hosted Star Search and was a regular in various commercials. JJ Jackson, a ground breaking DJ before his MTV days, also went back to continue his radio career. He passed away in 2004.

After MTV, Alan Hunter also appeared in a few films and moved back to his home state of Alabama and founded his own production company, Hunter Films. Mark Goodman, a popular DJ in Philadelphia and New York City before MTV, went back to radio. Nina Blackwood left MTV in 1986 and became the Music Reporter for Entertainment Tonight. She has also appeared in numerous music infomercials over the years and done some radio. Adam Curry, although not an original member of the first five V-J's, was an MTV mainstay from from 1987 to 1994. Now these four are taking advantage of new technologies to extend their careers.

satellite radio and iPods, is having an impact on Rock Radio listeners. But
most believe that radio is a venerable medium that will not be replaced by
these new media anytime soon, according to a web poll just released by Rock
Radio consulting firm Jacobs Media. The web poll was conducted during March-
April among more than 19,000 listeners of Classic Rock, Active Rock, and
Alternative radio stations from around the U.S.
"It's clear that we are in the midst of a technological tsunami that's

The Samsung SCH-B200 DMB handset has the new swivel screen feature and packs all the peripherals one could wish for: 2 megapixel camera, MP3 and MPEG4 playback, 260k LCD 2.2 inch screen, battery life that supports over 3 hours video playback and upgradeable TransFlash memory.
Although the Korean version uses satellite technology, a European model is also in the making; the SCH-B1200 will use terrestrial transmissions instead. There is no official line yet on when it will arrive here or how much it will cost.

Ford to test new diesel technology for auto-engines

Ford Motor Company has signed an agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to try and develop prototype of a new diesel engine, an EPA invention, for commercial use.

Diesel is 25-40 per cent more efficient than gasoline, but currently just one per cent of the American passenger vehicles use diesel.

Ford and EPA announced the agreement on Friday at EPA's National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where they showcased a Ford Galaxy minivan to demonstrate the 'Clean Diesel Combustion' (CDC) technology - developed by EPA.

The diesel minivan got 30-40 per cent better mileage than a gasoline minivan, while meeting EPA's emission standards for nitrogen oxide, EPA researchers claimed.

Accordingly, the new technology prevents by-production of nitrogen oxide during the combustion.

"Diesel engines are an extremely attractive technology to help achieve EPA's future emissions standards," said EPA's Jeff Holmstead.

"Moving these types of innovative technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace is essential, if we are to continue to improve air quality for all Americans," he added.

Ford's vice-president Dr. Gerhard Schmidt said that clean diesel engine development was an important part of Ford Motor Company's global strategy "to meet the future needs of customers and the environment".

Presenter Robert Kormos, M.D., University of Pittsburgh (Penn.) Medical Center, advocates the development and use of a pump device that will address, and in some cases eliminate, heart failure. Partnered with stem cell technology, the new pump would be smaller and minimally invasive and would allow a patient's heart to emerge strong enough to accept the implanted stem cells that would improve the heart's function and reduce or eliminate heart disease in the patient.

"We know from successful trials outside the U.S. that implanting stem cells results in myocardial recovery. By changing our way of thinking and addressing heart failure in its earlier states, and by using devices and stem cells together, a patient can enjoy life without heart failure instead of continuing to live with it," says Kormos.

Kormos also suggests that a new approach for ventricular assist devices (VAD) is on the horizon for cardiac patients. While VAD usage gains increasing acceptance, a new way of thinking may change the way doctors use these assistive devices.

Austin, Texas - When the three founding members of the 1960s rock group Cream take the stage during a May reunion at London's Royal Albert Hall, veteran recording guru Elliot Scheiner will be there, and so will Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

Scheiner's backstage presence will be no surprise. He has recorded many of the top rock groups for decades. But this time, he will be using a high-end audio workstation powered by two AMD 64-bit processors, along with a trunkload of related audio and computer gear.

AMD, best known for its PC chips, is making some headway in the recording industry.

Guitarist Mark Knopfler, the former leader of Dire Straits, has a similar AMD recording unit with him on his ongoing world tour. Peter Frampton has one on order.

Computer technology continues to make inroads into the analog world of music. At the consumer level, sales of digital MP3 music players such as Apple's iPod are booming. And in the business of recording music, both garage band performers and veteran record producers are at least experimenting with digital technology.

IT IS hard not to feel a little nervous. Andrew Ryan is trained to catch liars, and I am sitting in his lab at the US Department of Defence Polygraph Institute, preparing to lay a bald-faced whopper on him.

Earlier today, I participated in a mock crime, a short-lived melee that ended in aggravated assault, attempted murder and robbery. The act of stabbing a dummy in the chest and rifling through its purse has left me feeling more than a little guilty. My accomplice has instructed me to reveal nothing. But will my discomfort give me away?

Settling into a wide, comfortable chair, I begin answering questions, while a high-resolution infrared camera scrutinises my face, watching the blood swirl just beneath the surface of my skin. The camera forms part of a prototype for a new generation of lie detectors being developed by the US government. One day, they could be used to help unmask criminals, improve screening at border crossings and checkpoints, and perhaps interrogate terrorist suspects.

The drive towards new devices comes from a desire for something a cut above the "polygraph", the standard lie detector whose rubber tubes and wires are familiar from TV and the movies. Scientists have long attacked the device as inconclusive, and in 2002 a report commissioned by the National Research Council (NRC) in Washington DC found that the polygraph's performance falls well short of what is needed to tell the guilty from the innocent. As a result, the US Department of Energy began scaling back the polygraph security checks it was running on its own staff.

By Tom Lappas, Citizen Editor The first comprehensive study of the groundbreaking Apple iBook initiative in Henrico County's public schools shows that most students want the laptop program to continue even though some are unsure how much it is helping them academically. The survey, conducted for the School Board by a Northern Virginia consulting firm, also found that most parents support the program even though they prefer Windows-based computers and most teachers favor its continuation even though it has added to their workloads. "On the whole, there is interest in technology programs," Nadra Garas, the study's project director, told members of the School Board during a Feb. 10 work session. "There was a recognition that it is a helpful tool. A lot of parents have indicated that they think this is the way of the future." Henrico became the first school system in the nation to lease laptop computers for all of its high-school students when it entered into a four-year agreement with Apple in 2001. A four-year agreement for middle-school students began the following year. In the years since, a number of U.S. cities, counties and states have entered into similar laptop agreements. The School Board is considering whether to extend its high-school contract with Apple for another three or four years or take another direction. Its decision, expected in the coming months, will be made with a national audience watching. Henrico earned international fame for its agreement in 2001, and a decision to continue the initiative or end it will be viewed by many as either a validation or indictment of the overall concept. By the end of the school year in June, the school system will have spent an estimated $43.6 million on the initiative. That figure reflects the cost to lease nearly 26,000 iBooks; the provision of training and support for teachers, administrators and students; the purchase of software for the computers; and the enhancement or creation of computer network systems and wireless internet connections in schools. Without the initiative, the school system would have spent about $15.6 million on computer technology during the same period, according to HCPS Finance Director David Myers. School Board Vice Chairman Stuart Myers noted that the cost of the iBook initiative constituted less than 2 percent of the School Board1s total budget during the past four fiscal years. "Four years ago, a guy we all know [former Superintendent Mark Edwards] said that we could do this for less than three percent of our budget, and I don't know how many people believed him," Myers said. "But here it is."Identifying Benefits One of the most significant questions the School Board is expected to consider during its review of the laptop initiative is whether students have benefitted from having their own computers to take home each day. According to parents who participated in the survey, students spend an average of 1.8 hours per day using their iBooks while at home. The survey did not ask how much of that time was devoted to schoolwork and how much was spent on recreational use. The survey also found that 90 percent of families have another family computer at home, and that 92 percent of those computers are Windows-based. The iBooks are most effective as research and organizational tools, according to a majority of the 20,409 students who completed the survey. Seventy percent of middle-schoolers and 80 percent of high-schoolers want the iBook program to continue, but only 55 percent believe the computers have helped them perform better in school. Students reported that the iBooks are most useful in social studies, history and science. Among parents, nearly three-quarters support the continuation of the initiative and nearly that many believe the iBooks have helped improve their children's education. Slightly more than half also believe their children have accessed inappropriate websites through their iBooks. The survey found lukewarm support for the Apple operating system; 54 percent of parents would prefer a Windows-based system for their children, while only 12 percent favor Apple. High-school students also favor Windows over Apple, 51 percent to 24 percent, but middle-schoolers prefer Apple 41 percent to 36 percent. Teachers were split at 34 percent apiece, while administrators showed the strongest support for Apple, selecting it over Windows 66 percent to 8 percent. Among other findings of the survey: * nearly three-quarters of teachers and administrators believe that students without iBooks are at a disadvantage, but about 80 percent of such students said they are able to function effectively without them. * more than half of all middle school and high school students with iBooks reported that their machines needed repairs during the school year; * nearly a quarter of students said that they played games on their iBooks at least twice a week; * nearly 20 percent of teachers reported using their iBooks each day during school; Surveys were completed by about 80 percent of all students, 81 percent of teachers and 69 percent of administrators. The School Board is expected to consider its next step in greater detail at a work session Feb. 24. "Clearly there is a lot of support here for technology," Morton said after viewing the survey. "This quantifies things in a way we haven't been able to do yet." Morton said that a planned meeting Feb. 21 with more than 100 teachers and principals would be another useful opportunity for school officials and School Board members to gauge the value of the iBook initiative.

TEL AVIV -- Canada's first astronaut Marc Garneau has seen a lot of things most ordinary mortals never will. But even he was taken aback by the school project of a group of Israeli teenagers this week.
Mr. Garneau could hardly believe it when 15-year-old Tal Pritzker and his fellow students in the Space Technology group at the Meyerhoff Technical School in Tel Aviv showed him their latest project: a satellite and earth-tracking station that should be ready for launch in about two years.
"I'm amazed by what you've done," he told them. "I'd like to hire you all. It was very impressive. I don't think I've ever met youngsters who are so well informed."
"I was bowled over," he said in an interview. "There is a school named after me, the Marc Garneau Collegiate Institute, where we teach space sciences, but they've never actually built a satellite."
Mr. Garneau, president of the Canadian Space Agency, is leading a week-long trade mission to Israel to sign a co-operation agreement with the Israel Space Agency on Earth observation, small satellites and encouraging young people to learn about space.
It is both his and the agency's first visit to Israel. He is accompanied by representatives of six Canadian companies that are active in space technology and eager to explore commercial projects for the first time with their Israeli counterparts.

During his first flight, Mr. Garneau said he watched with alarm as a pall of smoke covering one million square kilometres settled in the upper atmosphere from the burning of the Amazonian rain forests. As the shuttle continued on its orbit, he saw evidence of man-made disasters across the globe.
Over Kazakhstan, he saw the dried-up Sea of Aral, once the fourth-largest body of inland water in the world, drained by the Soviets for irrigation. "It had terrible effects. It dried up, then the minerals in the dried-up areas blew over the land and essentially sterilized it."
Mr. Garneau said that Canadian scientists are working on programs triggered by space observation and exploration to tackle these and other environmental problems, including climate change and the depletion of the ozone layer.
The five-year, $5-billion budget for space research just announced by the government will keep Canada at the cutting edge, he added.
"We've learned a great deal about computer technology by rising to the challenge of sending rockets into space," he said. "The technology that we developed to build the robotic arm for the U.S. space shuttle, the Canadarm, in the early '80s, is now being used to perform robotic surgery."
Canadian medical scientists have gleaned vital information on bone loss from osteoporosis which occurs at 10 times the normal rate in astronauts because of weightlessness. A direct result has been the development of a new type of fake bone, Skelite, that can be used to help people heal faster after surgery.

The days of tying a string around a loose tooth, tying the other end to a doorknob, and slamming the door to pull a tooth, are gone.

Dentistry has entered a new era.

"We're a visually oriented, technology-oriented society," acknowledged Dr. Eric Shapira of Montara, who practiced general and cosmetic dentistry and oral surgery locally from 1976 to 2004 when an injury forced him to leave the profession.

Until he left dentistry, Shapira was among Coastside dentists who had practiced here for a long while. All share common denominators of training, skill, compassion - and flexibility in the face of progress.

Computers, digital X-rays, smaller-than-the-eye-can-see instruments and invisible braces are only a few of the once-undreamed-of dental wonders that are now commonplace.

And it's all in the hands of the kindly family dentist.

"There has to be a balance," Shapira said. "The human aspect of medicine and dentistry has to come into play. We don't forget that the patient needs to understand the ramifications."

So, what do you do when faced with a digital dentist? Just open wide.

Yesterday and today

The words "See your dentist" have traditionally struck terror into many hearts. But it's not so bad anymore.

Modern technology has redefined the dentist's office from the ground up, Shapira said. "Everyone's trying to re-invent the wheel."

For example, you can now use a new electric toothbrush that incorporates a toothpaste receptacle. Touch a button to squirt your dollop of toothpaste onto the brush.

You can relax - really - in the dentist's chair now. It's been revamped, with different cushion design and ergonomic shaping, for the comfort of patient, dentist and hygienist. Even armrests are new.

Miniaturization has come to dentistry. In oral surgery, dentists incorporate tiny microscopes to scan oral tissue. They manipulate micro-cameras that slip down the side of the tooth to capture images of the root. The process isn't pain-free; you'll need anesthesia, Shapira said.

Drill bits have evolved beyond the big mosquitoes of old. Today's instruments have supplanted the older drill bits that used to wear out due to the effects of revolving from 30,000 to 100,000 rpm.

There is a new test, Shapira said, in which doctors analyze a patient's saliva content and, based on its chemical and protein makeup, determine if the patient is at risk for periodontal, or gum, disease.

Good news for patients

Once upon a time, being told you needed a root canal brought sympathy cards from friends. With good cause, too, said Dr. John Moon. He bought Shapira's practice at 611 Church St. in Half Moon Bay, and he and Dr. Bonnie Akhavi, perform general and cosmetic dentistry, endodontics, oral surgery and periodontics there.

Once, Moon said, a root canal dragged over several appointments. Now, he uses a hand-held rotary machine to quickly, effectively clean those infected canals.

"It's like a vacuum cleaner you plug in," Moon said.

Having an implant once meant losing teeth and getting a partial denture. Now, implants either bond to the bone or are attached in place by a titanium screw. Crowns then go on, often immediately.

The technology is successful in replacing one or multiple teeth, said Dr. Robert Moody. He does general and cosmetic dentistry and whitening procedures, crowns, bridges, restorations and implants, in the practice he shares with Dr. Tina Yoo, at 538 Main St. in Half Moon Bay.

"We've seen dramatic increases" in implant technology, he said. "It's reliable and different, nowadays."

Cosmetic dentistry got a facelift too. To whiten a patient's teeth, Moody no longer uses lasers which can spawn problems.

Instead, he applies a whitening agent and uses a "curing light" to speed up whitening. It costs more than commercial whitening strips, Moody said, but patients like it: "Sometimes patients want quicker, rather than take-home."

He also noted that "very popular" treatments like porcelain crowns, veneers, and removal of metal or timeworn fillings, are on the rise.

Today's thin, shell-like, translucent porcelain veneers no longer mean chiseling away the tooth below. Instead, patients slip them into place "like a press-on nail," Moon said. It is popular among teens, he added, whose teeth may be discolored as a result of the antibiotic Tetracycline given to their pregnant mothers generations ago.

Getting rid of those old metal fillings - the ones made with amalgams of mercury and silver, of which there are 140 billion in existence, says Dr. C. Ray Sheppard, of Half Moon Bay - is urged by many dentists for reasons other than vanity. The stuff is not flexible like organic tooth material and can cause cracking in the enamel over time.

Now dentists use a composite plastic material in natural colors. It "holds the tooth together in a better way," said Moon, and "can really look exactly like the tooth."

It gets even more basic - down to anesthesia. Moon says he often numbs his patients now with non-invasive skin patches. "Sometimes you don't even need to give a shot."

In terms of advances in oral surgery, Moon cites the use of synthetic bone material. Surgeons can also graft necessary bone material from patients' hip bones, which are similar in density to jaw bone structures.

And he notes the use of lasers to reshape gums affected by periodontal disease; "not just the tooth but the gums too, so the teeth match that."

Dentures today are metal-free, Moon said. "No one can tell" they are anything other than your teeth.

'Metal mouth' no more

When Coastside teens and adults need braces, they head for Dr. Alexa Alborzi, who is in at 705 Purissima St. in Half Moon Bay on Tuesdays. (She also practices in San Mateo.)

Alborzi uses "Invisalign" and "almost-invisible 'ceramic braces'" on her mostly teen patients.

But new to her profession is the innovative "self-ligating Damon" braces. Now around for seven to eight years, the Damon system blends engineering and computer technologies. Each tooth has its own aligner, programmed for that tooth's specific desired movement.

The result is a gentler, more natural means of tooth realignment than with conventional braces. Treatment time tends to be shorter, by as much as 25 percent, Alborzi said. And she noted that Damon is good for grownups.

"It's especially ideal for adults because it is gentle," she said.

Computer technology, D.D.S.

Most of dentistry's major advancements have to do with computers.

"We are heading for the paperless office," said Shapira. Everything once limited to paper - photos, digital X-rays and records - are now at the touch of a mouse.

"It's all in the computer," said Sheppard.

Computers also simplify the process of referrals to specialists. And they make it easier for regular patients to consult their doctors.

"You don't even have to drive to the office" unless the problem is a new one, said Moody. "I just access (the) laptop and get information on the patient."

The use of computer-driven equipment in dental and surgical procedures is on the horizon, Shapira said.

"More and more and more in medicine, you work through command modules," he said. "I predict the day we'll have automated assistants. I'm serious."

Computer technology is big in Sheppard's office at 890 Main St. in Half Moon Bay. With help from his new CEREC computerized system, he makes crowns and restorations. And forget about the lab.

The computer system, he said, "eliminates those steps."

But technology still has not eliminated the dentist. And it won't, said Shapira.

"Robots are more exacting," he said. "Hands shake, eyes get tired. Technology is more practical.

"But it's technology guided by humans. Human vision and human judgment. You can't take that out."

I once again have to say this is a very good invention for health and the many who need precision dentistry.

The Office of Information Technology has assembled a committee to look into refreshing the campus telecommunications system and explore the possibility of sending phone conversations along computer lines.

The committee, consisting of representatives elected by deans and vice presidents, is looking into the installation of Voice-over-Internet Protocol, OIT spokeswoman Amy Ginther said. VoIP allows people to make telephone calls over a broadband Internet connection rather than a regular phone line. The switch would save money because calls would go over existing computer connections, making phone lines unnecessary.

“It’s a cost-effective way of delivering service,” she said. The amount of money the university would save is still unclear.

When making VoIP calls, users hear a dial tone and dial the number as usual, but the analog audio signal is then converted to digital data and sent over the Internet, according to the Federal Communications Commission. The signal is then converted back so it can reach a regular phone number.

Responsibilities of the committee include selecting a vendor and awarding a contract. The committee will have to examine what each VoIP vendor has to offer, including the quality of the service.

The sound of VoIP conversations may take some getting used to.
“It’s a different quality of experience and a different sound, but it’s stable,” Ginther said. “Anyone who uses a cell phone should be used to this kind of thing.”

Currently, calls to campus numbers are free for students in residence halls, but both local and long distance calls are billed through PaeTec Communications. The company charges 9 cents per local call and offers two long distance plans: either 8.9 cents per minute or $7.95 per month plus 3.9 cents per minute.

Students are hopeful a switch to VoIP might reduce these rates.

“I never use my dorm phone anyway, but I might if we saved money,” said sophomore criminology and criminal justice major David Gradin.

Freshman English major Jimmy Leathers agreed.

“The main reason I don’t use the dorm phone is you can’t make local calls without paying for it,” he explained.
Despite the lower cost, only four percent of households use VoIP service, the Telecommunications Industry Association announced this week. But use is on the rise. The association found 36 percent of households are at least somewhat interested in it, and predicts there will be 10 million total VoIP users by the end of this year and 26 million in 2008.

Leading VoIP vendors include Vonage and Nortel. Vonage allows users to add as many numbers as they want and provides a feature called SoftPhone that allows people to use their computer as a telephone by speaking through a headset.

Nortel champions VoIP due to its technical efficiency in managing fewer systems by eliminating phone lines. VoIP also allows for better bandwidth efficiency, Nortel states, because information is only transferred when users are actually speaking, which is referred to as silence suppression.

OIT would not comment on which vendors the university is looking at.

The VoIP boom has also attracted the attention of the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC announced on Saturday VoIP, as an entirely Internet based service, is not subject to regulation. The commission added that it would further examine “what its role should be in this new environment of increased consumer choice and what it can best do to meet its role of safeguarding the public interest.”

Researchers at the University of Bath have won a £261,000 grant to use the latest software to produce a blueprint of a designer drug that could stop influenza and some other diseases from replicating in humans.

The announcement of the grant comes at a time when fears are rising that an influenza outbreak developing from Asian chickens could kill thousands of people.

Professor Ian Williams, of the Department of Chemistry, will begin work in April on a project that could help pharmaceutical companies develop a better drug that could be taken by people coming down with flu to stop the disease developing.

The drug would work by being chemically very similar to part of the protective coating around the cells in our throats that the flu virus first attacks when a person becomes infected. The flu virus would be deceived into attacking the drug, called an inhibitor, instead of the cells.

The three-year project will be largely carried out by examining the behaviour of atoms of the influenza virus which attack cells, and atoms of the throat cells that are attacked. By using advanced software to model the way these atoms behave in highly complex interactions, the atomic structure of a suitable drug can be worked out.

Using computer modelling in this way can be of great assistance in drug design. Normally drugs are produced by trial and error in a process that can take many years.

Professor Williams and his colleague Dr Gus Ruggiero will use part of the grant from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council to buy computers with a combined power many times that of the most advanced desktop machines.

This will be the first time the software, developed in Germany, will have been used in Britain. It will allow accurate modelling of the behaviour of tens of thousands of atoms, many times more sophisticated than previous work.

“Developing a blueprint for a new way of fighting influenza is a very important task," said Professor Williams.

“We often think of flu as just a nasty illness which puts us in bed for a few days. But some outbreaks can cause death on a large scale – the world-wide outbreak in 1918 killed more people than the First World War itself. We may now be facing another flu outbreak, this time originating from chickens in Asia.

“If we are successful, we will have taken important steps in finding a new way of fighting influenza and other diseases. It will then be for the pharmaceutical companies to take our blueprint and turn it into a drug.”

Professor Williams said that his work is a more sophisticated development from similar modelling which produced two anti-influenza drugs, Relenza and Tamiflu, whose effectiveness is limited.

He and Dr Ruggiero will study sialidases, enzymes used by the flu virus to snip off a special type of sugar, sialic acid, from the throat cell, allowing the virus to enter the cell and reproduce.

The new drug would be chemically similar to the sialic acid, but would act to inhibit the sialidase. This would hinder the virus from entering the cells, and from leaving them should they gain entry, thereby controlling the spread of the infection.

Because of similarities between the enzymes used by different viruses and bacteria, a similar approach may also be useful in fighting other diseases such as the South American sleeping sickness, Chagas Disease.

New computer lab opens with aim of 'Bridging the Digital Divide'

NEWPORT - Nicole Roderick has run into hard times. She recently moved out of her sister's apartment at Tonomy Hill and is now homeless, staying at a shelter in Warwick.

But her children, Jeorge, 11, a fifth-grader at the Sheffield School, and Morgan, 8, a third-grader at the Coggeshall School, were busy Thursday afternoon at the modern computers of the new HOPE VI Computer Learning Center at the Florence Gray Center of Newport Heights, getting help with their homework and checking out the games online.

"The center is providing computer time to people who would otherwise have very limited access to computers," said Rhonda Mitchell, HOPE IV director for the Newport Housing Authority.

That's why Thursday's grand opening for the computer center - which features 20 new computers with connections to the World Wide Web and specialized services such as RINET, the Internet service used by the School Department - was called "Bridging the Digital Divide."

Civic and business leaders from the community, including Mayor John J. Trifero, City Council Vice Chairman Jeanne-Marie Napolitano, School Committee Chairman Charles P. Shoemaker and School Superintendent Mary C. Canole were present.

"There really is a digital divide in our society," said Constance Sullivan, director of the Newport Early Reading First Collaborative. "So much of our lives is intertwined with computer technology, you are in a different world if you don't have access to it."

James Reed, the Housing Authority's executive director, said the computer center was made possible by a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Besides paying for the computers, the grant allowed the authority to hire a director for the center, Peter Martin.

Martin, who worked in the computer industry for 31 years, came out of retirement to take the job. He has a master's degree in social work from Boston College, so he said he is drawing from his full background and interests for the job.

"I love it," he said. "I come to work two hours earlier than I'm scheduled, because I want to be a part of this."

He works closely with Sandy Cooper, an AmeriCorps Vista member who is the community involvement liaison for the center.

Martin and Cooper will be instructing and overseeing computer courses that include computer crafts, showing users of all ages how to design T-shirts, scrapbooks, CD covers and greeting cards on the computer. They also set up free e-mail accounts for seniors, teach people how to use the resources of the Internet on their job search, or lead users through the creation of a Power Point presentation.

Dan Erikson, unit director of the Park Holm-Tonomy Hill Boys & Girls Clubs, said the club will be offering a series of programs in the new center. These include Career Launch, an Internet-based class to help teenagers with resume writing and job preparation, and Skill Tech, a computer basics program.

The new center has been open for the past week and has had more than 100 people log in during that time, Reed said.

All the computers were being used by children during the open house, and the kids seemed to be having fun as they explored.

Among the students working on the computer Thursday was De'Anthony Allen, 13, a seventh-grader at the Thompson Middle School.

"I used it last night to do a paper on the digestive system," he said.

And today?

"I like the games you can play on the computer," he said.

Malaki Maloney, 12, also a seventh-grader at Thompson, has another use for the computer.

"I like being able to go online and listen to music," he said.

He demonstrated by going to "media player," clicking on "music," and typing in a title. Up came a song by 50 Cent.

Reed repeated how one user summed up the new center: "This is way cool."

China discovers new computer virus:

[World News]: Beijing, Feb 23 : Chinese information security experts have spotted a new variant of Mydoom virus disguised as an e-mail "sent failed" message and cautioned the public to be on alert, the state media reported today.

The virus, called Worm Mydoom M, attaches to files and then transmits via e-mail to addresses found on the infected machines, according to experts at the Tianjin-based National Computer Virus Emergency Response Centre.

The virus is disguised as an announcement of an e-mail sending failure.

If the virus gets into a computer, it sets up and modifies certain system files and creates a so-called back-door, a programme that sits on the affected computer to damage files contacted, according to the centre, the only anti-virus products testing and certification institution authorised by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security. Podcasting, a new technology similar to TiVo, allows the technologically with-it to record and store information for later listening. This latest technology is growing at an incredible pace and being utilized right here in the Northern Hills.
At Black Hills State University, two students are using this technology to advertise their politically-based KBHU radio show, Creepy Sleepy Show.
"I discovered Podcasting about two weeks ago and e-mailed Adam Curry," Creepy Sleepy Show host Dan Patterson said.
Adam Curry is known to most people as a former MTV "VJ," but since 1994 he has been involved with web site development and Internet programming. Curry is a key player in the development and promotion of Podcasting. Curry contacted Patterson for an interview and in turn plugged the KBHU radio show on his web-based Podcast, "The Daily Source Code." According to Curry's web site, thousands of people download his show everyday.
"We would really like to get this school to see the advantages of this technology," Patterson said. "I mean you can advertise anything you want and it is seen by thousands of people all over."
To obtain Podcasts listeners must have a computer, Podcasting receiving software and an MP3 player to listen to the audio. Once you have the software, you can subscribe to audio blogs over the Internet. Updates are sent directly through your computer and available for downloading immediately. You can listen to the audio directly over your computer or use your Apple iPod or MP3 player and take it with you.
Jeremy Likness, owner of Natural Physiques also likes to touch the world from his home in Lead. Natural Physiques is a health and wellness business and Likness uses the Internet religiously. He coaches interested clients on weight loss and nutrition and for the last year, he has utilized a phone-based radio show to deliver lectures on healthy living and interview professional fitness experts. While it seems that Sony, Toshiba and IBM are about to unveil a whopping 4.6 Ghz processing chip for PS3, we've been rather left in the dark as to the computing muscle that'll benchpress heavy chunks of code in Microsoft's Xbox 2.

But we do know graphics tech firm ATI has signed to work on the next-gen beast's chips, so every little nugget of news concerning the company twitches our speculation nerve.

Well, here's something that should make your brain melt and dribble out of your ears like pink pus. ATI has filed a patent that could possibly, maybe, potentially have something to do with the chip technology planned for Xbox 2 - if only we could work out what it means.

Tech website The Inquirer uncovered the patent, which describes a "Method and apparatus for determining a processing speed of an integrated circuit". That's the idea, here's a sample line from the explanation of the idea: "a first flip flop having an input port receiving an input signal, an output port providing a flip flop output signal and a timing port receiving an incoming clock signal."

Therapy sessions have adhered to a mainstream formula for years: the therapist, the patient, the dialogue and -- usually -- the colossal fee.

But envision a form of healing devoid of these elements, a method achieved simply by sitting down at a computer, listening to New Age melodies and watching kaleidoscopic images dance across the screen.

Sounds trippy, like a lotus-eater's paradise, doesn't it?

Actually, this new science-based CD-ROM technology called "Relax-Rejuv for Kids" has a youthful vibe that is gripping the adolescent demographic.

Billed as a "computer game with benefits," it may be just what children need to help process their emotional turmoil outside the often intimidating realm of the doctor's office.

One 14-year-old, Stephanie Beck, claims to have undergone an entire personality metamorphosis during the past two years on the program.

"In third grade I had a reading problem and my teachers were going to hold me back. It's embarrassing, but I had a really bad stuttering problem," Stephanie said in a telephone interview from her home in Portland, Ore. "Even in seventh grade, I went through a really weird time when I started to isolate myself from my friends for a while."

Stephanie now reads and speaks with fluidity, and has conquered her tendency toward social alienation, she said.

Users will now be able to save their presentations as Quicktime or Flash movies, and expect greater compatibility with other presentation programs like Microsoft PowerPoint.

Mac OS X will also get another update named OS X Tiger scheduled to be released during the first half of 2005. A long list of specifics was not available at the time of announcement, but Jobs claims over 200 enhancements are on tap. Some new features will include a desktop search application named Spotlight and RSS reader for Apple's Safari web browser.

Apple's iLife suite will also get a number of updates including HD support for its various video editing applications. Music mastering software GarageBand will also get some new features. CEO Steve Jobs announced several new Apple products lined up for the year at the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco on Tuesday. The highlighted products included several that can be considered economy models of Apple's historically high-priced line of computer products.

The most talked about of the new hardware items will certainly be the low-cost iPod Shuffle which had been rumored for months in internet discussion boards. Coming in two capacities 512MB (120 songs) and 1GB (240 songs) and priced at $99 and $149 respectively, the iPod Shuffle is a very slimmed down version of the highly popular and notoriously expensive iPod and iPod Mini. About the size of a cigarette lighter, the iPod Shuffle plugs directly into a computers USB port (similar to a USB jump drive) to download playlists from Apple iTunes. The low price also corresponds to a reduced feature set. The iPod Shuffle does not have any display screen, sporting only a limited number of controls for 'shuffling' your playlist, playing, pausing, skipping, and adjusting the volume. Despite its limited function, the Shuffle is bound to be a hit with the iPod curious not content to pony up for the 'real deal'. The iPod shuffle is available now in large quantities as to avoid the massive inventory shortage that followed the introduction of the iPod Mini.

A new budget Mac will also makes its way onto Apple Store shelves dubbed the Mac Mini. The Mac Mini starts at a low $499, but does not include a keyboard, mouse or monitor. More remarkable than the low price, perhaps, is the small-form-factor. Measuring 6.5" on each side and being only 2" tall, the Mini weighs in at a light 2.9lbs making it lighter than most laptops. This little cube is slim, not to mention sexy - you're going to want one. This device will probably appeal to the PC user seeking a low cost way to going the cult of Mac. Having to purchase input and output devices to accompany the cube may push it out of bargain pricing, but those with an empty set of KVM ports may take notice. The total cost is obviously more than the price tag, but will appeal to seeking tech with a sleek design.

Apple's AppleWorks productivity suite has been renamed iWork ($79). Including updated word processing program 'Pages' claimed to have a "sense of style." More significant than the work processor is the inclusion of Keynote 2, and updated version of Apple's presentation application. Keynote 2 will include a new set of themes and features including animated text and new export options.

Once more it may not be the best thing to buy but once again opinion more than fact so if you do decide to buy it my advice save up for the real thing instead of this dinky thing.

It's not the sexy, graphic evidence you see on TV shows, but everyday high-tech devices are increasingly becoming the key clues in solving crimes.

As we integrate technology into our lives, so do the criminals - even storing important information on their PDAs.

Det. Erik Harris, Palo Alto Police Dept.: "They keep their contacts and their meetings and their criminal activities on these devices as well, so that's very valuable evidence if we run across that."

Evidence that can now be analyzed at a new FBI regional computer forensic lab in Menlo Park.

Local police departments will have some of their officers here as well to be trained in extracting data from high-tech devices and breaking through encrypted information.

"The gentleman earlier said we're gonna take a bite out of crime. I think we're gonna take a gigabyte out of crime by doing this."

Chris Beeson, supervisory special agent, FBI: "Most of the investigations we open, at some point, we'll encounter computer or digital evidence."

Take for example the case of Lisa Montgomery, the woman accused of strangling a pregnant woman in Missouri and cutting her fetus from her body. The two women met through an Internet chat room. The FBI says computer files helped them track down Montgomery.

Now the same FBI tools will be available to solve cases in the Bay Area, much to the relief of local police departments that don't have the money to keep up with ever-changing technology.

Chief Rob Davis, San Jose Police Dept.: "For a local agency to stay on top of, budget-wise, every piece of equipment, they're going to need to combat what it is that comes out tomorrow is an extremely expensive proposition."

This new lab is the sixth in the country and more such labs are coming. By the end of this year, the FBI will open seven more computer forensics labs, stretching from New York to Colorado.

What it does: Three variants of Maslan, Maslan.A, .B and .C, have been identified by various vendors, and they differ only in details, such as the names of the files they install on the system. The important behaviors are consistent across variants.

It arrives sometimes as a conventional mail worm, with an executable attachment. This worm has gotten attention recently for using the file name PlayGirls2.exe. This file is 54272 Bytes in size.

The worm can also spread through network protocol vulnerabilities, although there is some confusion among the antivirus vendors over exactly which vulnerabilities it exploits. Symantec and Trend Micro agree that Maslan exploits the RPC DCOM Buffer Overflow (MS03-026) to remotely execute programs in vulnerable systems. Panda says that it exploits the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) buffer overflow (MS04-011). McAfee says that it exploits both. It doesn't really matter, because you absolutely should be patched against both dangerous threats and run a firewall that would block either attack.

However it gets to execute, either through one of these network attacks or by the user running the executable attachment, the first thing it does is to drop these files in the Windows System folder:

When the worm detects a window containing one of the above strings, it logs keystrokes and sends this information to a remote web site.

How to avoid it:

Don't run executables attached to unsolicited e-mail messages.
Apply all critical patches to Microsoft Windows
Run antivirus software and a firewall and keep them updated

How to remove it: No good manual removal procedure of utility exists. Use your updated antivirus software to remove it.

This is an articlke about how some a swiss racing team are making a supercomputer for racecar driving. Its supposed to be very fast but they made it very cheap and with what i read it is supposedly a bit big. But hopefully it will help by increasing the number crucnhing for the aerodynamics of cars. Formula One's Sauber Petronas, a Swiss racing team, has tapped a local system integrator named Dalco to build a 530-processor supercomputer to perform aerodynamics modeling for advanced race cars. The Opteron-loaded monster runs Linux with advanced fluid dynamics number crunching software from Fluent, a scientific modeling software vendor. 512 of the processors are used for raw horsepower, while the remaining 18 are for control and configuration. Hosting a terabyte of memory, the thermal monster burns about 88 kW, thus requiring special water-cooling racks from APC. Sauber Petronas decided the best name for the machine was Albert, named after the great physicist. Albert was built to replace the team's previous computer, an SGI Onyx, which Albert outperforms by 30x. The team went with Opteron over Itanium because it's much less expensive and has lower latency to memory. For more information, see the Techworld article.
